Mountain Walking Holidays

The Orjen Mountains rise directly up from the waters of the Bay of Kotor to a height of 1,894 metres above sea level. Throughout the range there are glorious views over land and sea, which make this a spectacular and rewarding area to explore. Montenegro Adventure offers one-week guided walking holidays to enable guests to really get to know and love these fantastic mountains.

Programme

The programme runs for eight days. The days either end of the trip will be taken up with travelling: leaving six full days for activity. The programme will include five full days of guided mountain walking and will leave one day free for you to plan your own itinerary. Typically, the mountain walking programme would comprise three day-walks and would finish off with a two-day expedition incorporating an overnight bivouac high in the mountains. Options for the free day could include: exploring the historic town of Herceg Novi, white water rafting in the Tara Canyon, sea kayaking in the Bay of Kotor or a power boat trip to the islands of the Bay of Risan. Depending on the activities chosen, there will be extra costs associated with these.

Experience

The programme will involve challenging high-level walking and is intended for participants who are experienced and confident mountain walkers in the British Isles. Participants who have the fitness and experience to enjoy walking in the mountains of, for example, the Lake District, Snowdonia or the Scottish Highlands should cope well with these walks and have a very rewarding experience. As yet, very few people venture into these mountains and the paths tend to be quite challenging – but then, reaching the summits is that much more rewarding! All the walks will be led by a qualified and experienced mountain leader.

Equipment

Your guide will carry all necessary safety equipment. Equipment for the bivouac will also be provided but, apart from this, you will be expected to provide all your own personal equipment. A full recommended kit list is provided – if any of the items are likely to present a problem to you, please contact us well in advance of the trip, so that we can arrange to obtain them for you.

Training

During the course of the programme, we will provide training in mountain skills such as navigation and security on steep ground. This training will be tailored to the environment we are working in and the requirements and interests of the group.

Travel

You will need to arrange your own flights to and from Dubrovnik. We will meet you at the airport and take you to your apartment. From then on, we will provide all transport for the rest of the trip and return you to the airport for your flight home.

Accommodation

We will be staying in luxuriously-equipped, two-person self-catering apartments; each with double bed, air-conditioning and satellite television. They are within easy walking distance of the sea and close to the ancient town of Herceg Novi. Meals are not provided: you may either self cater or eat out. Typically, the group would decide to take their meals together and we would have breakfast in a local café on the seafront, make up a packed lunch for the walk and, after the day's walking, go out for dinner in a restaurant in Herceg Novi.

Insurance

We are fully covered by public liability insurance, but you will need to arrange your own travel insurance. This should cover mountain walking and any other activities you decide to participate in during your trip.

Dates

Programmes will be running on the following dates in 2010:

Sunday 25 July to Sunday 1 August

Sunday 5 September to Sunday 12 September

Alternatively, if you have a group of between six and eight people who would like to participate in this programme, please contact us and we will be pleased to discuss suitable dates to run a programme specially for your group.

Numbers

In order to maintain a high-quality and safe experience, we will have a maximum ratio of eight participants per guide.

Cost

The total cost for each programme is £400.00 per person, based on two people sharing an apartment. If you require single-occupancy, there will be a single room supplement of £50.00. A deposit of £100.00 per person will be required on booking. The balance will be required eight weeks before the start of your trip. On receipt of your booking and deposit, we will send you a mountain guidebook and topographic map, so that you can discover more about this exciting part of the world.
